SABA GALLERY 3
This is the latest series of images from Saba, taken in 2004 and 2005. Most of pictures are the result of patience as opposed to luck or stealth.
Most of these pictures are nothing without their subject. For example, the yellowhead jawfish will retreat into its hole at the slightest perturbance. It takes at least five minutes of quiet waiting for its emergence. And then it takes another five or ten minutes for them to acclimate to the photographer's presence. And then you can get the really nice shots. They really do look like pale flames emerging from the rubble.
Blennies are generally quite engaging, but very small and easily overlooked. They live in small holes in coral, but with a little imagination enchanting images can be captured. For example, the spinyhead blenny presented below looks as though it is a snail emerging from its shell.
Sometimes I think I've taken a picture of a particular fish and on review it turns out to be something completely different that I've never noticed before. For example, I was convinced that the shy belted cardinalfish was a juvenile something-or-other before I found out otherwise.
