THE EQUIPMENT
Digital photography is revolutionizing the art of imagery.
The benefits are more pronounced underwater. No more running
out
of film while submerged! Even more exciting, the instant
image feedback
allows real time adjustments, eliminating much of the guesswork
inherent in such a complex environment.
My work horse is the Nikon
D1x, one of the best digital SLRs currently available. It is
capable of 3fps for 9 frames
and 5.3 million pixels. A 1GB IBM MicroDrive provides storage.
This allows me to capture about 132 frames in my preferred
RAW format.
The D1x has a magnification of 1.5x compared to standard 35mm.
I use a 105mm f/2.8D or a 60mm f/2.8D Micro-Nikkor lens
for macro
shots and a 14mm Sigma lens for wide
angle.
This camera and lens combination
creates top quality images when printed up to 20x16. It is excellent for magazine and newspaper reproduction.
For underwater photography, this setup is housed in a Seacam
housing. It is superbly engineered; in my opinion,
it is the best housing currently available.
I've added the Seacam Sports viewfinder S180. The viewfinder
enlarges the image to almost 1:1. The image is intense
and brilliant and shows all the information at the image edges.
It's a revolutionary development
for underwater photography and provides an inestimable advantage
in shooting macro subjects.
